Wright Scores, Champions League goal for McKennie

It’s the Europa League and UEFA Conference League in Thursday’s 1/22 update to the USMNT players abroad roundup. That starts with Tanner Tessmann’s Lyon beating Berne 1-0 at home in the Europa. Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored the game’s only goal a minute into first-half stoppage time. Auston Trusty’s Celtic drew 2-2 on the road at Bologna. Reo Hatate put Celtic up in the 6th and saw red in the 34th. Trusty doubled the Celtic lead in the 40th. Bologna pulled a goal back in the 58th and equalized in the 72nd minute.

Eric Palmer-Brown subbed out in the 74th for Panathinaikos’s 1-1 draw at Ferencvaros. Trailing from a penalty in the 62nd, Anass Zaroury equalized for Panathinaikos in the 86th minute.

Updating the USMNT Players abroad roundup for games played in 1/21, we’re back with the Champions League in action and games from the Championship. That starts with Tim Weah’s Marseille losing 3-0 at home to Liverpool in the Champions League. Liverpool opened the scoring a minute into first-half stoppage time. Marseille gave up an own-goal in the 72nd and Liverpool scored again two minutes into stoppage time.

Weston McKennie’s Juventus shutout Benfica 2-0 at home. Khephren Thuram opened the scoring in the 55th and McKennie doubled the lead in the 64th minute. Johnny Cardoso subbed on in the 56th for Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw at Galatasaray. Giuliano Simeone opened the scoring for Atletico in the 4th and an own-goal leveled the score in the 20th minute. In the Championship, Aidan Morris’s Middlesbrough won 2-1 at Stoke City. Trailing from the 15th, Alan Browne equalized for Middlesbrough in the 48th and Tommy Conway gave them the lead in the 59th. Stoke saw red in the 77th minute.

It’s the first matchday in 2026 for the Champions League, with the league phase continuing for USMNT players abroad. That wasn’t good news for the two USMNT players in action in the Champions League, with losses for Malik Tillman’s Bayer Leverkusen and Folarin Balogun’s AS Monaco. Things went better for some of the USMNT players in the Championship, with Haji Wright scoring in a Coventry City win and Patrick Agyemang’s Derby County beating Charlton Athletic.

Champions LeagUE

Malik Tillman subbed on in the 58th for Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 loss at Olympiacos. Bayer Leverkusen fell behind in the 2nd and Olympiacos scored again a minute into stoppage time. Folarin Balogun subbed out in the 73rd for AS Monaco’s 6-1 loss at Real Madrid. Trailing from goals in the 5th, 26th, 51st, a 55th minute own goal, and the 63rd, Jordan Teze scored for Monaco in the 72nd. Real Madrid added a sixth goal in the 80th minute.

Championship

Patrick Agyemang subbed out in the 76th for Derby County’s 2-1 win at Charlton Athletic, taking the lead from an own-goal in the 17th. Bobby Clark doubled Derby’s lead in the 60th. Charlton pulled a goal back in the 67th. Derby County’s Matthew Clarke saw red in the 85th minute. Haji Wright subbed out in the 81st for Coventry City’s 2-1 home win over Millwall. Romain Esse opened the scoring for Coventry in the 11th with Millwall equalizing in the 29th. Coventry retook the lead from a Wright goal in the 78th minute.

George Campbell subbed out in the 80th for West Bromwich Albion’s 5-0 home loss to Norwich City. West Brom fell behind in the 16th, with Norwich adding goals in the 49th, 69th, 73rd, and 89th minutes.

La Liga on ESPN Deportes: Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca at 8am, Barcelona vs Real Oviedo at 10:15am, Real Sociedad vs Celta Vigo at 12:30pm, and Alaves vs Real Betis at 3pm.

Ligue 1 on beIN Sport: Nantes vs Nice at 9am, Metz vs Lyon at 11:15am, and Lille vs Strasbourg at 2:45pm. Scottish Premiership on CBS Sports: Hearts vs Celtic at 10am.

Univision has the Bolivia vs Mexico friendly at 2pm. Concacaf Women’s U-17 World Championship on Fox Soccer Plus: Guatemala vs Cayman Islands at 3pm, Cuba vs Grenada at 5pm, and Honduras vs Aruba at 7pm. FS2 has Haiti vs Antigua and Barbuda at 6pm and Costa Rica vs British Virgin Islands at 8pm.

Monday has the Premier League on USA: Everton vs Leeds at 3pm. La Liga on ESPN Deportes: Girona vs Getafe at 3pm.
